Crash occurred on westbound I-8 at SR-163

SAN DIEGO - An active-duty Marine was killed in a four-vehicle crash Saturday on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, and three other people were sent to hospitals.

The accident was reported shortly before 5 a.m. and tied up traffic for three hours on westbound Interstate 8 at state Route 163, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A black sedan had crashed into an embankment, and a person was ejected from another vehicle, according to authorities.

The 20-year-old Marine was declared dead at 5:19 a.m. on northbound state Route 163, north of the Interstate 8 overcrossing, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. His name was not immediately released.

Three people were taken to hospitals following the crash -- two to Rady Children's Hospital and one to Scripps Mercy Hospital, a San Diego Fire-Rescue dispatcher said.

According to the CHP, the westbound lanes were closed at Texas Street and motorists were diverted off the freeway.  All lanes were reopened about 8 a.m.
