A man ran from the center divider across Interstate 8 near Mission Bay Park and was struck and killed by a passing California Highway Patrol car, CHP officers said Sunday.

The unidentified man appeared to be between 40 and 60 years old, according to authorities.The man, believed to be a transient, ran onto the eastbound lanes of I-8 at about 10:10 p.m. Saturday just east of the Sports Arena Boulevard interchange, according to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.The man was struck by an on-duty CHP patrol vehicle that was headed east on the No. 3 lane, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. The CHP said the officer tried to swerve to avoid striking the man, but the man was hit by the right front part of the cruiser.The man died at the scene, authorities said.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
