Joseph Adam Rodriguez of San Diego was riding in his cousin's car on West Mission Bay Drive about 7:30 p.m. May 21 when he asked the driver to pull over on a stretch of the roadway that crosses the harbor's ocean inlet, according to lifeguards and the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Saying he wanted to go for a swim, Rodriguez got out of the vehicle, climbed onto the railing of the span and jumped over the edge. His relative searched in vain for Rodriguez for about 20 minutes, then made a 911 to report what had happened.

Lifeguards combed the waters and shoreline in the area for the next several days, finding no sign of the missing man.

On Monday, a passer-by in a boat found Rodriguez's body floating in the harbor, the Medical Examiner reported.
