Man suspected of fatally stabbing stepfather in jail: Thomas Guss facing murder charges

Stabbing occurred at 8600 Taylor St

SAN DIEGO - A 25-year-old man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his stepfather during a fight at an East County home.

Deputies responding to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 8600 block of Taylor Street in Spring Valley found Ervin Harris, 40, badly wounded shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff's officials.

Medics took Harris to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, where he died a short time later, homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.

The alleged assailant, Thomas D. Guss, had fled before deputies arrived.

Guss was arrested near the scene of the slaying this morning and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The reason for the dispute between the two men was unclear.
