SAN DIEGO - A man suspected of crashing a dump truck through fields and fencing and destroying private property was recuperating Sunday in a hospital, a CHP officer said.

The crash occurred at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday where La Cresta Road ends at Greenfield Drive, northeast of El Cajon, CHP East County PIO Brian Pennings said.

Officers said the dump truck was towing a trailer loaded with equipment, which went through the intersection and crashed into an unoccupied travel trailer, Pennings said.

Pennings said a subsequent search uncovered the suspected dump truck driver.

"He sustained minor to moderate injuries and was taken for medical attention," Pennings said.

The CHP officer said the dump truck was impounded and a mechanical inspection will be performed on it to determine if mechanical failure caused the crash.

The registered owner of the vehicle was contacted to find out who was supposed to be driving the dump truck, Pennings said.

No estimate of property damages was given.
