VISTA, Calif. - 10News has uncovered new details about the man suspected in the "Chubby Bandit" robbery series.
Aaron Hyman, 27, was arrested in connection with the robberies, which occurred during a two-week span.
On Saturday, he was taken into custody in the Westfield Shopping Center parking lot in Carlsbad as he was getting out of his car.
A task force made up of FBI agents, investigators with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and both Carlsbad and San Diego police officers made the arrest.
Authorities recognized Hyman in surveillance camera photos taken during the heists from prior run-ins with the law.
The FBI believes Hyman is responsible for five bank robberies from Poway to Carlsbad. The latest robbery occurred last Thursday in Rancho Bernardo.
Hyman is also suspected in an attempted bank robbery in Solana Beach. Authorities believe he robbed a CVS Pharmacy in San Marcos of prescription drugs.
10News uncovered that Hyman has a lengthy criminal record.
In addition to a DUI in 2005, he has had several arrests for being under the influence of drugs and possessing drug paraphernalia. Court documents also reveal that Hyman also has a domestic violence court date with a family member – which was scheduled for this Thursday – although he now sits in Vista jail.
Hyman will appear in federal court on robbery charges.
