EMERALD HILLS (KGTV) -- Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 44-year-old man in Emerald Hills just after midnight Sunday.

The San Diego Police Department received a call at 12:28 a.m. from someone who reported a stabbing outside a residence at Evelyn Street, a few blocks from Encanto Elementary School.

Responding officers found a witness doing CPR on an unconscious male lying on the ground with stab wounds to his torso.

Despite the efforts, the stabbing victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"Preliminary investigation reveals residents heard an argument, went outside to investigate and saw two males fighting," police said in a release.  "One of the males fled the scene in a vehicle.  A witness found the victim lying on the ground, called police and began CPR."

A woman who lives at the home where the incident happened says she doesn't know the victim or the attacker. She told 10News that her young children were terrified after hearing the commotion outside their home.

Police tell 10News' Matt Mendes that two people have been detained in the stabbing. No other information was given at this time.

The victim is described as a 44-year-old Hispanic man of Lemon Grove.  His name is being withheld until family members are notified.
