The man was in the passenger seat and his girlfriend was in the driver's seat as they were parked near 54th Street and Imperial Avenue when another man walked up to the passenger side with a handgun and opened fire about 2:20 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

The victim was struck eight times in the chest area. The woman was not injured, Stafford said.

The victim's girlfriend then drove to the 5300 block of Manzanares Way, near South San Jacinto Drive, where her sister called police, Stafford said.

Gang detectives were investigating, he said. The victim was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition, Stafford said.

The suspected shooter was described as a black man in his 20s with a short afro. He was wearing a white t-shirt.
