Man shot with beanbag gun during downtown standoff

SAN DIEGO - A man was shot several times with a beanbag shotgun following a short standoff outside a sushi restaurant in downtown San Diego’s East Village late Sunday night.

According to San Diego police, at about 11 p.m., officers and K-9 units responded to the area of 14th Street and Broadway on a report of a man who had trespassed and was possibly armed.

Officers learned the man had been kicked out of the Hive Sushi Lounge at 1409 C St., and had later returned. He appeared mentally unstable, police said.

After an approximately 15 minute standoff in which the man refused to surrender with his hands up, officers shot him with the beanbag rounds. A police spokesperson said he still refused to surrender, so a police dog was sent in. The dog reportedly chewed on him for about one minute until officers were able to come in and take him into custody.

The man, who was not immediately identified, suffered minor injuries from the beanbags and K-9 bites, police said.

Police did not confirm if he will face any charges.
