Brother of ex-NBA player Dominic McGuire shot, killed in Chula Vista apartment

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The 27-year-old brother of professional basketball player Dominic McGuire was shot and killed early Thursday in a Chula Vista apartment where a 5-year-old girl was sleeping, but she was not harmed, police said.

Police officers dispatched around 12:20 a.m. to investigate reports of gunfire at 520 E. H St. in the gated Beacon Cove Apartments found two people who told them a friend had been shot a short time earlier, said Chula Vista police Lt. Fritz Reber. The victim was found dead inside apartment 41, he said.

Witnesses told investigators that at least one suspect entered the apartment and fatally shot the victim, but it remained unclear if he was the intended target, according to the lieutenant. No suspect description was immediately available.

The child found in the apartment was the victim's girlfriend's daughter, 10News learned. She was found sleeping in a bedroom inside the unit and was unharmed, Reber said. She was taken to the Polinski Children's Center and was being held until her parents could be notified.

Desiree McGuire said she was watching the news when she learned about a fatal shooting at her son's apartment complex. She rushed over to make sure he was alright.

"I'm in shock. It's like a nightmare … it's a nightmare; a mother's worst nightmare," she said. "He was my baby, he was my youngest."

McGuire said her son was loved. At 27, Jamel "Mel Mel" McGuire was an aspiring pro basketball player. She said he wanted to be a pro player like his brother.

10News was there as Dominic McGuire arrived at the scene to try to see his brother's body.

Dominic McGuire played at Lincoln High School in San Diego. He went on to play college basketball at Cal and Fresno State before being drafted by the Washington Wizards in the 2nd round of the 2007 NBA Draft. He currently plays in the NBA's D-League.
