CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A suspected gang member who threw a bottle at a fellow bus passenger, gashing his face, as they rode through Chula Vista last summer was sentenced Thursday to eight years in state prison.

Jovan Rivera, 25, pleaded guilty last year to assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury. The Aug. 27 assault was recorded by a video surveillance camera, according to Chula Vista police.

Rivera confronted the victim on a Metropolitan Transit System bus shortly before midnight and issued a gang-type challenge, to which the other man replied that he did not want any trouble, CVPD Capt. Gary Wedge said.

Rivera, "who appeared to be intoxicated, sat down, but continued to cause a disturbance," Wedge said last year. As the bus came to a stop at Third Avenue and Naples Street, Rivera accosted the man again, then threw a glass bottle at his face, causing a cut that required several stitches to close, the captain said.

A day after local news outlets carried stories about the attack, a tipster called the police and identified Rivera as the attacker, Wedge said.
