CHULA VISTA, Calif. -
A Chula Vista man pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of felony child abuse after authorities said he allowed his girlfriend's young son to become dangerously drunk.
According to Chula Vista police, 22-year-old Joseph Calles was caring for his girlfriend's 4-year-old son, Alex, and their five-month-old baby, when he left the room for a few minutes to check on the infant.
Police said Alex apparently drank the vodka and Squirt soda cocktail Calles left on a table.
Doctors said Alex's blood-alcohol level was almost lethal at .23. Alex has since recovered from the incident.
Calles faces up to one year in jail and three years probation when he is sentenced in March.
Calles may also be required to take a 52-week child abuse counseling class.
