Emergency crews Friday freed a 71-year-old East County man who wound up trapped underneath a small boulder while digging in his yard.
The resident was excavating a drainage line in front of his home in the 8000 block of Morocco Drive in La Mesa about 10:45 a.m. when the roughly 30-pound chunk of compacted clay fell onto his lap, pinning him, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.
It took firefighters about 10 minutes to get the rock off the victim with pry bars, after which he was able to scale a ladder to safety.
Medics examined the man at the scene and determined that he did not have any injuries.
