SAN DIEGO - A gunman shot and killed a man and wounded a woman during a house party Sunday morning in the Mountain View area of San Diego, a police lieutenant said.
According to San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings, the gunman approached the front yard area of a home in the 600 block of Jewell Drive where he opened fired and wounded the victims.
"I just got up quick," said neighbor Josue Lopez. "I was like, 'What's going on?' And I went outside and I just saw people screaming, coming out of the house and it just got crazy."
Police and paramedics were dispatched to the location at 1:41 a.m. where a 63-year-old man died at the scene and a 51-year-old woman was shot in the lower extremities, Hastings said. Paramedics rushed her to an area hospital.
Family members who did not want to be interviewed told 10News they were celebrating a birthday party when someone pulled up to the home and started shooting. They cannot understand who or why the gunman targeted them.
"No fight broke out before," said Lopez. "It just happened out of nowhere."
Neighbors described the family who lives at the home as friendly and say they are shocked that something like that happened right across the street.
"I don't see anything unusual going on because all I see is the people getting in their cars and leaving or coming back … and we speak, 'Hi, how are you?'" said neighbor Clarina Williams.
Lopez added, "Nice people, we get along with them. We talk. We're like really close to them. Every now and then we say hi. They have our back and we have their back."
There was no suspect description, the police lieutenant said.
San Diego police homicide detectives asked anyone with information on the shooting to call (619) 531-2293.
