The California Highway Patrol said the man was injured after crashing into a retaining wall near the Balboa Avenue offramp. The impact was so strong it knocked the engine out of the car and several possessions were thrown from the vehicle.

Officers responding to the incident placed the man in handcuffs but had to remove one of the cuffs to load him into an ambulance. At that point, the man began resisting efforts to take him into custody, forcing firefighters to help subdue him.

The man was eventually taken to the hospital, and CHP officials later determined his violent outburst was the result of a head injury, not a desire to flee nor the result of drugs or alcohol.

10News learned the man, identified only as a 35-year-old Dana Point resident, is not being charged with a crime.
