Man in custody linked to 3 local bank robberies

Roberto Amado Sepulveda arrested Monday

SAN DIEGO - A 24-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of robbing an Egger Highlands-area credit union this week and at two local banks last month, FBI agents said.

Roberto Amado Sepulveda of San Diego allegedly confronted a teller at Navy Federal Credit Union in the 500 block of Saturn Boulevard shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, demanding cash and claiming to have a pistol and a bomb, according to the FBI.

The bandit fled with an undisclosed sum of cash. Hidden in the currency was an electronic device that enabled police to track down Sepulveda at an Imperial Beach home, officials said.

Detectives believe Sepulveda also robbed a Chase Bank branch in the 1100 block of Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach on Nov. 17, and struck again four days later at an AmericanWest Bank branch in the 1300 block of Rosecrans Street in Point Loma, according to the FBI.

Sepulveda was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail, pending arraignment scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
