A 23-year-old man was killed Friday in a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting in the Emerald Hills area of San Diego and the victim's 6-month-old infant narrowly escaped being wounded by a bullet that struck the child's car seat.

Officers responded about 1 p.m. to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Market Street and Euclid Avenue and found the victim, identified as San Diego resident Jamar Johnson, in the driver's seat of a vehicle. He had been shot several times in the upper body, according to Lt. Manny Del Toro of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.

Johnson was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

"Homicide detectives ... learned that (Johnson) was in his vehicle at a stop light on Euclid Avenue at Market Street when a newer Jeep SUV drove alongside the victim's car," according to Del Toro. "The suspect vehicle stopped and one of the occupants ... leaned toward the victim and opened fire."

Del Toro said Johnson's 6-month-old child was in a rear car seat that was struck by gunfire, but the infant was unharmed.

No additional suspect information was immediately available.
