ENCINITAS, Calif. - A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train early Saturday.
Encinitas Sheriff's Station responded at 7:10 a.m. to a report of pedestrian struck by a northbound Amtrak train along the 1200 block of North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, San Diego Sheriff's deputy Ed Macken said.
"The pedestrian involved was a white adult who died of his injuries at the scene," Macken said.
Vernae Graham, an Amtrak spokesperson in Oakland, said Amtrak Pacific Surfliner No. 763, which operates between San Diego, Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo, was the train involved in the incident.
"The train conductor and the locomotive engineer were relieved of their duties following the incident," Graham said. "The train was delayed after the fatality and did not resume running until 9:21 a.m."
The victim's name was being withheld pending identification of next of kin.
The Medical Examiner's Office was investigating the cause and manner of the victim's death.
