A motorist who fled the scene after fatally striking a 25-year-old mother of three walking along state Route 76 last summer was sentenced Thursday a year in jail.

Rickey Lester Burns, 70, pleaded guilty last month to a charge of hit-and-run in the death of Candice Marie Nelson.Nelson was struck about 4 a.m. Aug. 22 as she walked on the north shoulder of state Route 76 in unincorporated San Diego County near South Grade Road, near Palomar Mountain.Burns, the driver of a 2002 Ford Taurus, swerved but failed to avoid her, then sped off, according to the CHP. He abandoned the car nearby and fled with his two passengers in the area of Valley Center Road.The Escondido resident was arrested the same day, and his passengers were released.The victim was the sister of Deanna Fridley, who is awaiting a retrial on murder charges stemming from a 2007 crash that killed two couples on the same road near Pala.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
