BORREGO SPRINGS -- A 52-year-old man has been arrested for bludgeoning and strangling a man in Borrego Springs Saturday.

Brett Leslie Boynton, 55, was found dead Saturday morning. His cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma with possible strangulation.

Boynton's roommate, Mark Peter Waugh, 53, was arrested and booked into jail Sunday on suspicion of one count of murder, according to sheriff's detectives.

Waugh was detained Saturday morning as a person of interest after deputies were called to the 400 block of Verbena Drive at about 7:45 a.m. There, they found Boynton dead with signs of trauma to his upper body, according to Sheriff's Homicide Lt. Kenneth Nelson.

Waugh was being held at the Vista jail until his arraignment in Superior Court scheduled for later this week.
