Jose Luis Rodriguez, 31, was single and leading a transient lifestyle, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Rodriguez was found floating and unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool in the 1000 block of Terrace Crest at about 8 a.m. Sunday by the owners of the home.

"A woman woke up, saw a body in her pool, and called us about 8:12 a.m.," said El Cajon police Lt. Tim Henton. "When we got there he had been dead for quite some time."

Paramedics were called to remove Rodriguez from the pool and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Henton said police received a couple of calls from residents in the same area earlier at 4 a.m. reporting a man "running around in the neighborhood."

"We sent units out but they couldn't find him. He may have been hiding out," said Henton. "The body in the pool this morning fits the description of that man."

Henton said there was no sign of trauma on the man's body.

"It looked like he may have been running through these yards and ended up by accident in a pool," Henton said. "One of the neighbors who saw him said he looked like he might have been under the influence of drugs."

The investigation is ongoing.
