POINT LOMA - A 27-year-old man is dead after suffering a fall off Sunset Cliffs early Tuesday morning.
The fall occurred at about 4 a.m. at Ladera Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.
The man was looking at lights with three friends when he lost his footing and fell 40 feet. His friends called 911, and a person walking along the beach spotted him.
Firefighters responded and attempted a rescue operation and lifesaving measures, but he was confirmed dead at about 4:50 a.m. His body was brought up the cliff by 5:30 a.m.
The circumstances of the fall and the identity of the victim were not immediately confirmed. San Diego police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
In January, there was a similar fatality in this same area. A woman slipped while taking pictures of a relative.
Even though there are gates that block the parking lot leading to the cliffs overnight, neighbors say it’s still too easy to reach them, inviting the possibility for more tragedies.
“This area is dangerous, it’s not protected and it’s not secured and there could be better lighting, better signs,” said Barry Kaplan, who lives nearby. “And there should be some sort of gate in the area to prevent people from coming in at night.”
Police tell 10News they do not have enough staffing to constantly patrol the area.
