Man dies from injuries after Pacific Beach fight: Parents hope witnesses will come forward

SAN DIEGO - A family whose son died after a street fight in Pacific Beach is looking for answers.

"To die from a punch? It's just insane," said Tammi Holsomback, the victim's mother. "It's very, very hard to accept."

Steven "Kyle" Wood, 27, died after a fight that took place early Mother's Day morning.

10News' media partners at San Diego 6 sat down with his parents, who were in town from Florida to be with their dying son at his bedside.

They say their son was walking home from the Tavern Bar in Pacific Beach with his roommate at about 2 a.m. on Mother's Day when he saw a fight taking place at Rigoberto's taco shop on Garnet Avenue across the street.

When Wood tried to intervene, he was hit from behind by another man and fell to the ground.

It did not end there. His mother said when Wood returned moments later to confront his attacker he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the ground.

Wood was placed into a drug-induced coma at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. His parents took him off life support more than a week later. He died Friday night.

"I'll have that in my mind for the rest of my life," said the victim's father, Steve Wood. "To see his 14-year-old sister when I had to tell her."

San Diego police homicide detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the fight to come forward.
