Man dies during Navy diving exercise

CORONADO - Authorities have identified a 29-year-old man who drowned during a Navy diving exercise at the Naval Air Station in Coronado.

Coll Perske died Monday after he failed to resurface during the night diving exercise near the North boat launch in San Diego Bay, the Navy said in a news release. His coworkers brought him to the surface and attempted CPR. Paramedics arrived and tried advanced cardiac life support with no success.

He was transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be saltwater drowning.

Perske was an employee for the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). According to a news release from SAIC, Perske supported the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific’s Marine Mammal Program.
