Man Dies After Mustang Crashes Into Tree

A man died Sunday when he lost control of a speeding Ford Mustang convertible and crashed into a tree, San Diego police said.

The rental Mustang was traveling westbound in the 8800 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard at about 2 a.m. when the crash occurred, Officer David Stafford said.

A nearby resident called 911 while another person tried to pull the man out of the vehicle, which was on fire, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Paramedics tried to save the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no immediate word if drugs or alcohol played a role in his death.

The Medical Examiner's Office said the victim as a 39-year-old man who lived in Bremerton, Wash.

His name was being withheld, pending notification of his next of kin.
