Man dead after fight in Gaslamp Quarter

SAN DIEGO - A 25-year-old man was killed Sunday during a fight with another man in the Gaslamp area of downtown San Diego.

The incident occurred at about 1 a.m. Sunday outside the Encore Champagne Bar & Dining Room at 6th Avenue and F Street.

Officers in the 500 block of F Street were flagged down by a concerned citizen and found the victim on the sidewalk unresponsive, said San Diego police Lt. Manuel Del Toro. He was identified by friends Sunday as Michael Beaver.

Friends said Beaver's body was laying along the sidewalk before a witness flagged down police officers.  Medics then rushed him to an area hospital, where he died a short time later.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Beaver was in a verbal and physical confrontation at 500 F St., after leaving a local business in the Gaslamp area, Del Toro said.

10News obtained cell phone video of the crime scene shot by pedicab driver Fadi Qaqo.

“People just fight for no reason,” Qaqo said. “I never thought someone would come downtown to have fun and drink. and then end of the night will be dead.”

The man believed to have been involved in the fight left the area in a hurry.

The suspect was described as a black male between ages 28 and 30, weighing about 170 pounds with long dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing a green shirt, sagging pants with underwear exposed, the police lieutenant said.

San Diego police homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the fight to call them at (619) 531-2293.
