Man cut from car after smashing into palm tree in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA - It took firefighters an hour to free a man from his mangled car after he crashed into a palm tree in Chula Vista early Thursday morning.

The crash occurred before 1:18 a.m. on Olympic Parkway, east of Brandywine Avenue. Chula Vista police report that the man went off the road and drove his Honda Accord into a large palm tree.  A second palm tree also came down onto the roadway.

A pair of security guards spotted the man and called 911. It took Chula Vista firefighters an hour to cut the roof and doors off the car and extricate the driver. He was airlifted to a Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest with serious injuries.

Officers at the scene told 10News that the victim, who was in his 20s, told them he had just gotten off work and was very tired. He was alone in the car.

All eastbound lanes of Olympic Parkway were expected to remain closed between Brandywine Avenue and Heritage Road until about 8 a.m., police said. Morning commuters should avoid the area.
