Humberto Gonzalez Cecena, 34, allegedly attacked the other man shortly before 12:30 a.m. at their residence in the 1500 block of Willson Road in the unincorporated Dehesa area, east of El Cajon, sheriff's Sgt. Joe Passalacqua said.

Later in the morning, medical staffers at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa notified sheriff's officials about the stabbing.

The 36-year-old victim, whose name was withheld, was listed in stable condition with a wound to the abdomen, Passalacqua said.

Deputies tracked down Cecena near his home, arrested him and took him to county jail, where he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. He was being held on $30,000 bail.

Investigators determined that the suspect allegedly grabbed a knife from a bookshelf and attacked his roommate during an argument that erupted after the two men "consumed a large amount of alcohol," Passalacqua said.

The sergeant declined to disclose what the men were quarreling about.

"As far as (motive), this is an ongoing investigation, and we are refraining from comment," he said.

It was unclear how the wounded man got to the hospital.
