NEW YORK - A man was arrested after authorities said he hacked at his wife with a meat cleaver before firefighters rescued her on a New York City street.

Police say Ming Guang Huang was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation Monday. He was arrested on charges including attempted murder. It's not immediately clear whether the 28-year-old has a lawyer. A message left at a possible phone number for him wasn't immediately returned.

Authorities say the attack unfolded Sunday on Canal Street, a main thoroughfare in New York's Chinatown.

Firefighters say they saw Huang dragging a screaming woman. Authorities say he pulled out the knife and slashed her as firefighters rushed over and subdued him.

Police haven't released the woman's name. She's hospitalized, but her condition was not released.
