Man arrested following crash, pursuit in El Cajon area

Omar Troncoso taken into custody

EL CAJON, Calif. - A hit-and-run suspect was arrested Monday after police said he led officers on a car and foot chase through El Cajon.

El Cajon police said 37-year-old Omar Troncoso faces auto theft charges after what appeared to be a burst of crimes.

The pursuit started early Monday morning when a license plate reader alerted an El Cajon police officer to a stolen car in the area of West Main Street and Marshall Avenue.

Police said when Troncoso saw the officer, he got on eastbound Interstate 8 and sped off. Police said Troncoso was then involved in a crash with two other cars before running across the freeway on foot and darting through neighborhoods.

Officers said his female passenger stayed at the scene of the crash and was released since she did not know the car was stolen.

A mother, who was shaken up and did not want to be identified, said he tried to break into her home, banging on all doors and windows. She said she was terrified because she has three children and a fourth on the way. She hid her kids under the bed and hoped he would not get in.

A helicopter guided El Cajon police officers and sheriff's deputies, who seemed to be at every intersection in an all-out search for Troncoso.

They zeroed in on an apartment complex in the 500 block of Ballantyne Avenue. Neighbors said Troncoso was found hiding in a bush and then taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
