SAN DIEGO - A 21-year-old man was punched in the face by a man who stole the 2006 Mustang convertible he had just rented and the suspect was later arrested, a San Diego police officer said Sunday.
The suspect was apprehended after police spotted the stolen car in El Cajon and waited until the suspect returned to the vehicle, San Diego police Officer David Stafford said.
The carjacking occurred at 6:25 p.m. Saturday while the Mustang was parked in the 600 block of A Street, Stafford said.
The victim had just rented the convertible from Sunset Car Rental and was sitting in the car with the top down when an unknown man walked up to him, Stafford said.
"The suspect punched the victim in the face and pulled him out of the car. The suspect then drove away northbound on 7th Avenue in the stolen car," he said.
The victim suffered minor facial injuries.
"The stolen car was found about two hours later by El Cajon police officers in the 1200 block of Broadway in El Cajon," Stafford said.
El Cajon and San Diego police were waiting for the suspect when he returned to the car, and he was taken into custody, to be booked into the county jail on suspicion of carjacking and auto theft, the officer said.
