Man accused of beating ex-wife in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA - A 64-year-old San Gabriel man accused of beating his ex-wife in Chula Vista was facing a likely murder charge Wednesday following her death over the weekend, police said.

Martha Huffman, 63, died Sunday morning at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Grantville, where she had been hospitalized since the Feb. 26 beating, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Chula Vista police allege Huffman was beaten with a brick at her home in the 100 block of Twin Oaks Circle by her ex, Rand Eugene Huffman. He has been jailed on suspicion of attempted murder since the day of the beating.

Pending autopsy results, he will be charged with murder, CVPD Lt. Lon Turner told reporters.

"It's a highly disturbing and sad case," he said. "Our hearts are with Martha's friends and family."

The former couple divorced more than 30 years ago. They had a son who lived with his mother and had a recent dispute with his father over a property deal, Turner said, adding the son had taken out a restraining order against his father.
