The crash occurred at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of North Beech Street and East Lincoln Avenue, police said.

Police said 67-year-old Carlos Gomez Pantoja of Escondido was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing Lincoln Avenue with family members.

His initial injury appeared to be only a fractured arm, police said. No other family members were injured.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop to give aid, police said. Witnesses described it as a white SUV or a gray pickup with a camper shell.

Pantoja was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away from injuries sustained in the incident.

On Sunday, family members mourned Pantoja's death.

"He was the center of the family," said Lilly Terrazas, Pantoja's daughter-in-law. "He was the backbone of the family. He always brought all of us together in good times and bad. He was always there. He was like my own dad."

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the vehicle involved.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call the Escondido Police Department at (760) 839-4722 or traffic investigator Nick Kluka at (760) 839-4966.
