A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly having consensual sex with a 15-year-old Encinitas girl, who later reported that she was kidnapped and raped by three men in an attempt to hide the tryst from her parents, the sheriff's department announced Wednesday.

Sheriff's detectives said Jose Adrian Cano met the 15-year-old girl online through the website, Mocospace, which is also a popular phone application. During a press conference Wednesday, detectives said the two corresponded for about a month. Det. Pete Carrillo said Cano allegedly picked the girl up from school, had sex with her and dropped her off last Friday. The girl told authorities she was scared of how her parents would react and made up the elaborate kidnapping and assault story.

Carrillo said Cano, a Vista resident, was arrested as he left his home Tuesday. Carrillo said Cano was on his way to meet another girl he found through the website.

Cano was booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of three felonies -- contacting a minor online with the intent to commit a sex crime, committing a lewd act with a 15-year-old and having unlawful intercourse with a minor.

Investigators have identified at least three additional victims, and they said Cano has been meeting underage girls through the website for a couple of years.

Cano's arrest came four days after the 10th-grade girl reported being kidnapped and raped by three men while walking home from school along Melba Road in Encinitas Friday afternoon.

News of the supposed crime stirred alarm and concern throughout the North County after the girl gave detailed descriptions of the supposed assailants, which authorities turned into composite drawings and publicized widely, along with warnings to area families and school officials.

On Monday, authorities disclosed that the girl had confessed to having skipped the final class of her school week, meeting with a man she had been in contact with via computer and having consensual sex with him.

"The [girl's] parents had warned their daughter about the dangers of communicating with strangers online," San Diego County Sheriff's Department captain Sherri Sarro said. "[She] was embarrassed, ashamed and scared of how her parents would react to her being victimized by someone she had met online."

The accessibility of the Mocospace website on mobile devices also raised another red flag for detectives, who said the site has very little parental controls.

"This kind of brings up a new fear because a lot of kids have cell phones," said San Diego Sheriff's detective Randy Avila.

Despite the lies told in the beginning, detectives said the teenage girl is still a victim. Whether or not she will face charges for filing a false report or if her parents will have to pay back the investigation costs, that is to be determined.

Parents like Kayonne Stollar said Cano needs to be held accountable.

"No 15-year-old knows what they're getting itno until after the fact. Isn't that part of being a kid? They think they're invincible," she said. "He is five years her senior. He should know better and he knows what he's doing."

Parent Paula Ables said, "He's an adult and there are consequences and everyone needs to know that. It's a shame this is what our kids are facing right now."

Parents also voiced concerns about Internet dangers and worried that people like Cano know how to exploit teens who are looking to grow up too fast.
