Local woman, 77, claims $1.1M Powerball prize

SAN DIEGO - The winner of a nearly $1.1 million Powerball ticket bought in Oceanside was identified by the state lottery Tuesday as a 77-year-old grandmother.

Tessie Paiva matched the numbers 19, 25, 29, 36 and 48, but missed the Powerball number of 12 in last Wednesday's drawing.

"I think I would have died if the bonus one was there," Paiva said.

She bought her winning ticket, which she called "a blessing from the Lord," at Mission Marketplace, 3772 Mission Ave. in Oceanside and claimed her prize Friday.

Paiva, who's lately had to contend with termites, a sagging floor and leaky roof at her mobile home, said she plans to also help her family and donate to her church.

"My kids have been trying to help (with her home repairs), but they can't afford it either," Paiva said.

Someone in Florida picked all the right numbers to win $150 million.
