Local Uber customer charged for costly 'joyride' she didn't take

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Uber customer has a warning: beware of others charging a joyride to your account.

Late Saturday night, Abril Pillado and three friends ordered an Uber outside a bar in the East Village. After 10 minutes of waiting, Pillado figured the driver couldn't find them and would cancel the order. They got home with Lyft.

On the next day, Pillado got an email to rate her $102 ride from Uber.

"That's when I started to freak out, because we didn't order from Uber. We ordered from Lyft," Pillado said.

She believes someone hopped into her Uber.

The route showed a ride all over the county, ending in La Mesa.

Pillado said she hoped Uber adopts safeguards to protect users from similar experiences.

"Uber should consider more stringent identification practices to avoid this type of scam or fraud in the future, either requiring the showing of an ID or least requiring the prospective passenger to identify the Uber account holder," said attorney Spencer Busby.

After 10News started asking questions, Uber refunded her.

"We do encourage both riders and drivers regularly to confirm they have the right person," said Uber spokesperson Tracey Breeden.
