Local teacher named 'Teacher of the Year' in 2010 arrested on suspicion of having child porn

Timothy Hensley in federal custody

SAN DIEGO - A teacher who was named Site Teacher of the Year at Bell Middle School in 2010 is in federal custody Tuesday after investigators say they found several images of child pornography on DVDs in his home.

By all accounts, Timothy Hensley, who taught eighth grade science, was a respected teacher at Bell Middle School. However, federal investigators said he has a dark side.

At about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a search warrant in hand, federal agents scoured through the five iPods, an iPad and three computers in his North Park home. Hensley was allowed to leave because he was not under arrest at the time.

An investigator said they found 290 DVDs and a preliminary check revealed that some had pornographic images of children.

Jose Morachis' daughter attends Bell Middle School. He told 10News, "Week after week we hear this stuff. I mean, where does it stop? Where does it stop?"

After finding the images, investigators tracked Hensley down and found him sitting in his car near the San Diego Zoo, which is near his home. Investigators told 10News reporter Itica Milanes that the 39-year-old was evasive and did not cooperate.

ICE Homeland Security investigators arrested Hensley and took him to the federal jail in downtown San Diego.

Morachis said he would like to see better background checks for teachers.

"You need to really dig deep because these are our kids," he said. "They're spending money on other things. What about our kids? What about the people we're supposed to be trusting to take care of our kids?"

Hensley is expected to be arraigned this week.
