SAN DIEGO - Authorities said a Chihuahua puppy was rescued in Sunset Cliffs Friday after it survived an 80-foot fall.
The San Diego Police Department said the 3-month-old male fell off the cliffs near Ladera Street at around 2 p.m.
Lifeguards rescued the pup and took care of it at the lifeguard tower in Ocean Beach until it could be evaluated by a veterinarian.
According to lifeguards, the dog’s owner could not be located and may have left it behind.
Daniel E. DeSousa, deputy director of the San Diego Department of Animal Services said the puppy was under their care, but that it suffered some serious head trauma, so it was transferred to an emergency hospital for observation overnight.
DeSousa said the dog's treatment will be covered by the Department’s Spirit Fund.
