Youthbuild Prepares Young People For Jobs In Construction

The Black Contractors Association of San Diego was awarded nearly $1.1 million to operate a program that prepares youth for construction jobs, the U.S. Department of Labor announced on Tuesday.The agency distributed nearly $31 million to 31 groups around the country in support of the 5-year-old Youthbuild program, which provides hands-on construction training and helps youngsters complete high school."Youthbuild helps young people who might otherwise slip through the cracks gain the educational and occupational skills that are necessary for a successful future," said Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. "At the same time, these youngsters make valuable contributions to their neighborhoods through community service projects and the construction or renovation of affordable housing."Around 13,000 people in 44 states -- including former juvenile offenders, teens who have aged out of foster care and high school dropouts -- have gone through the Youthbuild program, according to the Labor Department.
