SAN DIEGO - Thousands jogged and walked through Balboa Park and surrounding neighborhoods Saturday night during the 26th annual "Light the Night Against Crime" 5K.
This year, San Diego County Crime Stoppers dedicated the event to the late Christopher Wilson, a veteran San Diego police officer who was gunned down by a fugitive during a shootout at a Skyline-area apartment complex on Oct. 27, 2010.
Participants honored San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Johnson and Detective Ali Perez, who were both wounded in a shootout with a suspected child molester at a Lakeside apartment complex last month.
Members of Wilson's family were scheduled to attend the event, as were San Diego police Chief William Lansdowne and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, according to Sally Cox of Crime Stoppers. Undersheriff Ed Prendergast sent the participants off.
Neither Johnson nor Perez were scheduled to attend, Cox said.
