Leonard Knight, artist who created Salvation Mountain, dies at 82

The artist behind Salvation Mountain– a piece of art made out of a small hill near the Salton Sea – has died.

Leonard Knight passed away at 1:40 p.m. Monday, according to a post on the Salvation Mountain Facebook page. He was 82.

Knight died in his sleep at the Eldorado Care Center in El Cajon, according to a report by the Imperial Valley Press.

He dedicated much of his life to creating Salvation Mountain, which is made from adobe, paint and adorned with Bible verses. Knight last visited in November.

So far, no services or memorials have been planned for Knight.
