LA MESA, Calif. -

A La Mesa police officer is recovering on Monday evening after he was bitten on the hand by an El Cajon police dog.

Units from both La Mesa police and El Cajon police were responding to a domestic violence call on Orchard Avenue in La Mesa when the incident occurred. The police dog, which was from an El Cajon police K-9 unit, was assisting.

The officer was bitten on the left hand below the pinky. He was bandaged and presumably taken to the hospital for stitches.

Neither El Cajon police nor La Mesa police officers on scene would tell 10News why the dog bit the officer.

There is no word on what will now happen to the police dog.
