LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A toddler drowned Tuesday after his parents found him in his family's swimming pool, according to the La Mesa Police Department.

Emergency responders were called to a home on the 7200 block of Princeton Avenue around 8:57 a.m. where they found parents performing CPR on their two-year-old son, police said.

The parents told police they put the boy to bed in his crib last night and found him in the pool in the morning, a police captain said.

The pool was not fenced or gated, police said. The pool is located down a set of stairs below the house.

La Mesa Police said Tuesday the boy apparently left the home through a sliding glass door sometime in the night or morning.  His parents believe they locked the slider and they're not sure how the door was opened, said police.

Heartland Fire transported the child to Grossmont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
