SAN DIEGO - An 83-year-old woman considered by some to be one of the world's most notorious international jewel thieves was arrested again, this time in Riverside County.
Doris Payne is accused of stealing a $22,000 ring from a Palm Desert jewelry store, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The alleged theft happened at El Paseo Jewelers on October 21.
In 2011, Payne was sentenced to a 5-year prison term for stealing a $10,000 ring from the Macy's store at Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego. Her attorney, Gretchen von Helms, said it's likely Payne was released due to good behavior.
"I just talked to her recently; she just got out and was doing well," said von Helms.
In her prime, Payne dressed to the nines and waltzed into jewelry stores around the world, authorities said.
Payne said she started stealing when she was 14 years old to support her mother, and her international crime spree was detailed in a documentary.
A movie about her life is said to be in the works, and reports indicate Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has signed up to play Payne.
Payne is being held in lieu of $45,000 bail.
