Iowa AG says San Diego-based company The Active Network agrees to refunds

Issue was over membership fees

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa attorney general's office says a San Diego-based company that operates a fitness website will pay refunds and change its marketing practices.

Attorney General Tom Miller says in a news release Friday that The Active Network will pay $237,167 in refunds to Iowans who were charged for membership programs. Miller alleges that when people registered online for activities such as marathons, the company enrolled them in a program and charged an annual $59.95 fee.

Miller says more than 9,500 residents paid the fee at least once, though about half challenged the charge and received a refund. Others paid hundreds of dollars over several years.

Besides the refunds, The Active Network agreed to pay $15,000 to Iowa for consumer fraud enforcement.

The company denied liability in the agreement.
