Proposed San Diego Gas & Electric power substation angers Chula Vista company
Substation would impact view of Inland Industries

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The city of Chula Vista may be trading one eyesore for another this weekend.
This Saturday, 10News will have live coverage of the implosion of the South Bay Power Plant. The final demolition of the 50-year-old plant marks the end of an era for Chula Vista and the beginning of the city's ambitious Bayfront Master Plan.
However, attorney John Moot told Team10 investigators a new, 10-acre San Diego Gas & Electric power substation for might be built less than a mile down the road.
"The substation is scheduled to be built right here at the very southern end of the Chula Vista Bayfront," Moot said as he stood in front of property owned by his clients, Inland Industries.
Moot said the substation includes an 83-foot tall tower and two 68-foot towers. Moot said "it will be an eyesore" for Inland's businesses, and he argued that too much of the proposed design is above ground.
"There's a document that was signed that clearly anticipated that these lines and poles would be predominantly underground," said Moot.
Team10 obtained a copy of a 2004 agreement between SDG&E and Chula Vista. Moot said the Memorandum of Understanding spelled out the power lines should be "undergrounded".
According to an email from an SDG&E spokeswoman, Inland Industries is the only group opposed to the new substation and Moot is "distorting facts."
Chula Vista officials declined to comment.
Moot said his clients actually don't oppose the substation, but are concerned with how it will change their view of the Chula Vista Bayfront.
"They don't understand why they're not being able to enjoy the Bayfront renaissance," said Moot.
The California Public Utilities Commission is debating the substation's future.
Chula Vista's Bayfront Master Plan is a 550-acre plan to bring open space, parks, restaurants and retail, residential properties, and a hotel resort and convention center.
