International Child Porn Ring Suspect Linked To San Diego

The 10News I-Team uncovers San Diego ties to a man arrested in Tijuana in one of Mexico's biggest child pornography cases ever.

Arthur Leland Sayler -- arrested June 21 with 4 million photos and videos of child pornography, police say – is a possible key to an international child porn ring, according to Mexico's Attorney General office.

“Four million pictures -- is it 4 million children? It is a horror,” said Marisa Ugarte, executive director of the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition.

Federal agents out of Mexico City made the arrest. Inside the home Sayler shared with his wife, agents found 15 hard drives full of child porn, police said.

“They picked up a piece of trash from our neighborhood and we can breathe easier because of our kids,” said neighbor Maribel Rocio.

The I-Team checked the California license plates on the Toyota pickup truck parked at the Tijuana home – it’s registered to Art Sayler. He used it to routinely cross the border to San Diego, where he worked on fixing computers.

The I-Team tracked all San Diego addresses tied to Sayler going back to 1985.

He opened several postal boxes, including one in San Ysidro that Sayler was using at the time of his arrest. We learned he went there three to five times a week to pick up his mail and often sent small packages.

The I-Team uses a database service to track public records. One address Sayler was tied to was that of a school. It’s the Rescu Academy in Kearny Mesa -- a small private school.

The I-Team talked to Art Aragon, executive director of the school, who confirmed Sayler was there four weeks ago responding to a computer service call and that he only came twice to fix the computers in a front office and didn't have any contact with students.

I-Team research showed Sayler worked for Emulex for nine months beginning in 1989; it’s an international computer networking company with headquarters in Costa Mesa.

The I-Team learned Sayler is now in La Mesa State Penitentiary in Tijuana, facing child porn possession charges. His trial has already started and may go as long as a year.

Ugarte worries he could beat the charges.

“It's where you get to the Ministerio Público and you get in front of a judge, that things change,” she said.

Mexican authorities supsect Sayler's child porn network included Canada, Mexico and the United States, at least.

“For the sakes of 4 million pictures of children, and who knows how many children -- for the sakes of that, we cannot let go of this case,” said Ugarte.

Arthur Sayler was born in Canada and is also linked to addresses in Orange County and Santa Clara County.

The I-Team has shared its findings with local law enforcement.

According to the Crimes Against Children Research Center, the number of arrests in the United States involving child pornography possession doubled in recent years. It grew from 1,713 arrests in 2000, to 3,672 arrests in 2006.
