SAN DIEGO - A man with a severely injured hand was evacuated from a container ship far off San Diego early Saturday by a boat crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Station San Diego.
Crew members aboard the Caroline Maersk, a 1,040-foot cargo ship from Denmark, contacted the Coast Guard on Friday evening to request a medical evacuation. A 52-year-old Filipino man had injured his hand during a drill, the Coast Guard reported.
The ship was about 340 miles southwest of San Diego on Friday but steamed closer to shore during the night.
A 45-foot Coast Guard Response Boat from Station San Diego met the ship five miles off the coast this morning and transported the man to San Diego for emergency medical treatment at about 6:30 a.m., the Coast Guard said.
