The Hotel Del is where the iconic comedy "Some Like It Hot" was filmed. The hotel can be seen in almost all the outdoor scenes and held a special place in the heart of director Billy Wilder.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a Forever stamp immortalizing Wilder and the Coronado landmark.

"Some Like It Hot" and the Hotel Del were such a big part of his career that it was only appropriate to have them in the stamp image," said Eva Jackson, who is with the U.S. Postal Service.

Wilder and the film's stars, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, spent two weeks at the hotel filming in 1958. Wilder searched far and wide and handpicked the Hotel Del for a reason.

"He liked the fact that we could pass as a 1920s resort," said Hotel Del Coronado historian Christine Donovan. "'Some Like It Hot' really had the Del as a character."

Donovan said the Del has always been popular with Hollywood celebrities and directors who chose it for its character. Now, it is the Hotel Del that chooses not to make movies. Movie production these days takes too long and shuts everything down. The hotel is too busy for that, but it was not always that way.

"It's because of Hollywood, I think, that the Del survived the Depression which were years that a lot of Victorian resorts especially went under," said Donovan.

Not only did the Hotel Del survive but it is the last of the icons left from "Some Like It Hot."

"Billy is gone and all the actors are gone, so really all that's left of the movie physically is the Del," said Donovan.

Now, it is captured in a stamp forever.

The Billy Wilder stamp is one of four great film directors stamps issued Wednesday.

The 1995 Marilyn Monroe stamp was also unveiled at the Hotel Del because of her strong ties to it.
