Homeward bound: Boy takes scooter onto San Diego freeway

SAN DIEGO - An 11-year-old boy reportedly visiting family in San Diego told troopers he was so homesick that he decided to take his scooter onto the freeway and make a more than 150-mile trip home to see his mother.

According to California Highway Patrol, at about 5 a.m. Friday the boy was found riding on northbound Interstate 805, south of Murray Ridge Road in Serra Mesa. CHP troopers had responded to several 911 calls about a scooter that had crossed several lanes of traffic.

The boy told troopers he was trying to go see his mother. He was first taken to a CHP office and then moved to the Polinsky Children's Center. San Diego police located the boy's mother in Bakersfield.

Meanwhile, two vehicles that were passing by while troopers were talking with the boy on I-805 were involved in a minor crash. One of the cars allegedly fled the scene. CHP is investigating.
